Windows 7 Beta, Part 2

Yeah, RC1 is out now, I haven’t gotten it yet. I wasn’t planning on having time to use it and didn’t want to download it when all the tubes were clogged in the first few days.

So, some additional thoughts on Win7 Beta:

The good:

  • There’s a neat feature where if you extend a window’s height beyond the bottom of the screen it automatically resizes to full screen height.
  • The file preview bar to the right in explorer windows is a nice add on.
  • Stability seems reasonably good, haven’t seen major issues yet

The bad (mostly interface issues)

  • The option to run things in admin mode is rather obnoxious. If I am logged in as an admin user, then run as admin. Prompted by this, I noticed that an administrator account didn’t exist, it doesn’t have a password that I recall setting and I cannot create one because the user settings claims it exists.
  • Ultramon works poorly with most any Win7 visual themes, this is not Microsoft’s fault and I’m sure the Ultramon devs will make a version that works sometime after Win7 is actually released. It bothers me that Ultramon is even necessary – I’d expect that shortly after XP Microsoft would have enabled the ability to have a taskbar covering multiple monitors.
  • The “All Programs” link… takes too long to pop up on it’s own and having the list shown in that tiny confined space is horrible. The old hierarchical menus were nice.
  • Although I’m a fan of the control panel’s contents, I’m not sure I’m a fan of single clicks. It’s just different from the rest of windows.
  • ctrl-alt-delte to task manager takes too long and requires a mouse click. There’s no reason to blank my screen just to show me some options. There’s also no reason to make me click instead of just hitting “t”

Having done some reading, I think I shall now explore (duration unknown) the openSuse flavor of linux.
