Geekdom Reigns

I now have in my posession a 24dbi 2.4ghz antenna. Exhibit A:

What good it does me… not really sure, other than seeing just how many wireless access points I can pick up. There’s a Panera about 2 miles down the road. I wonder if I can reach it, but I’m doubtful since I think there’s a sizable hill between us.

The max input power rating is 100 Watts. For reference, microwaves are about 500W up to 1600W, which is of course contained. Your typical wireless access point is in the 10’s of milliWatts. We have a microwave generator, which I suspect is 2.4ghz and does between 50 and 100W, at work. I wonder, if I were to pump 100W into this thing just how much is radiated. Maybe I can remotely heat people up in the parking lot. Probably not so much, but still, it’s fun to scheme. For anyone who’s read the Left Behind books – this would be conceptually similar to the D.E.W.s (Directed Energy Weapons) they use in the end.
