Grand Haven Sunset

I was in Muskegon for an archery shoot and figured I’d head down to Grand Haven to check out the ice on Lake Michigan.  I thought it was going to be too early to catch sunset and didn’t really want to wait around.  Turns out I was right on time – pulled up just as the sun was hitting the horizon.  I walked out a little way, weighing the various Coast Guard warnings against the observation that the ice was built up several feet above water level, and thus likely safe (a conclusion corroborated by the rest of the people out there).

I’m pretty happy with the picture – I like this one for the alignment behind the series of small ice pads that lead out toward the sunset.  The sky is a bit busy with cloud lines in multiple directions and some of the jet trails were a bit more subtle a few minutes earlier before they had spread.  It would have been awesome if it was a calm day and the water provided a clean reflection sans ripples.

Picture taken with a Sony a6000, E-PZ 16-50mm lens @ 24mm, f/8.0, 1/125 sec shutter, ISO 400.  Shot in RAW and converted after the fact.

As a side note, not about the picture, but about the camera, I couldn’t figure out how to get into bracketing mode on the Sony.  I’m inclined to agree with the reviews – their sensors are great, cameras are solid, but their menu structure and overall operational organization seems kind of pieced together.
