Kayaking

For anyone I haven’t talked to over the summer, I have been kayaking a lot. Let me tell you, I am absolutely amazing at it. I have been declared an anomaly by Doug because I was able to figure out how to roll on my own after a 15-20 minutes lesson in my old Egret. I then got my new boat and we able to roll it after a little practice my first time out. I can now do what could be defined as 4 different rolls.

Below you can see the boat I now have. It truly is blaze orange so you can see it 41 gigamiles away.

There are two colors I would take over this one, jet black and lime green. Neither color is currently made.

I’ve been to two sea kayaking symposiums, one in Muskegon at Big Blue Lake early in the season and one up in Grand Marais later. The first one was good for introduction classes although little limited in it’s usefulness due to my boat at the time. The second was awesome for it’s 18 mile trip along pictured rocks. The classes were good, but by that time I knew pretty much everything there was to know about kayaking, so I didn’t really need them.

I have not been up North as much as I planned on this summer. I planned on working aobut half time and being up there for the rest of it, but with my kayaking interest that has gotten changed. We have done a couple kayak missions. The first was crossing under the Mackinac Bridge, the over to Mackinac Island and to Round Island. We camped there for the night then returned in a direct shot to Mackinaw City. The second was a paddle out to the Wagoshaunce abandon lighthouse which is 2 miles off shore and in some very rough water. We still have a couple more planned, and the group is growing.
